Why Surgery

Why Surgery?

Depending on your injury, surgery may be a necessary step in your recovery process. A surgical procedure is commonly recommended for a person who has failed conservative treatment such as medications, activity modifications, physical therapy, and who continues to have pain.

The decision to undergo surgery can be nerve racking and stressful for any patient. It is important to us that you are comfortable with your decision and that you are confident about the procedure that is going to be performed.

When thinking about whether or not to proceed with surgery, we recommend that you observe how your injury affects your daily life. Are you able to do the activities you like to do? Do you have pain daily? Does your injury limit you? If the answer to any of these questions is “yes” then surgery may be the right choice for you. Sometimes there is structural damage to the joint, ligaments, or tendons that will affect your function over the long term. Then surgery would be indicated to prevent dysfunction now and in the future.

It is important for you to make an informed decision about proceeding with surgery. Please feel free to contact Dr. Snibbe with any questions, comments, or concerns about your procedure. We are happy to assist you in any way we can during this process.

Do I really need surgery?

Before deciding on any surgery, it is often recommended and important to consider obtaining a second opinion before proceeding. As a courtesy to new or prospective patients, Dr. Snibbe is willing to review physician reports and outside x-rays/MRIs in order to help you determine if surgery is indicated for your condition. This information can hopefully confirm and support your decision to proceed with surgery or avoid unnecessary surgery.
